Contributing to Research on Harmful Practices in Universities

At Recultured, we are committed to advancing research in the field of harmful practices within higher education. Our goal is to contribute valuable insights and data that can inform policies, improve responses, and ultimately create safer environments for students. By leveraging our expertise and experience, we aim to fill critical gaps in existing research and provide evidence-based recommendations for universities.

Existing Research on Harmful Practices

Research on harmful practices in universities has highlighted several key issues. Studies have shown that harmful practices such as forced marriage, honour-based abuse, and female genital mutilation are often under-reported and inadequately addressed within higher education institutions, despite 18-24 being the most common age range of victims and survivors of such abuse. Many universities lack comprehensive policies and training programs to effectively support victims and survivors with such practices being seen as a part of someone’s culture or religion. Additionally, there is a significant gap in understanding the barriers that prevent students from disclosing their experiences.

Recultured's Research Initiatives

To address these gaps, Recultured is launching several research initiatives aimed at understanding and improving university responses to harmful practices. One of our key projects involves setting up focus groups with students across a range of universities. These focus groups will explore how confident students feel about disclosing their risk or experience of harmful practices. By gathering firsthand accounts and insights, we aim to identify the barriers to disclosure and develop strategies to overcome them.

Our focus groups will be designed to create a safe and supportive environment where students can share their experiences openly. We will use qualitative research methods to analyse the data, ensuring that we capture the nuances and complexities of each student's experience. The findings from these focus groups will be used to inform our training programs and provide universities with evidence-based recommendations for improving their responses.
