The Genesis of Recultured: Transforming University Responses to Harmful Practices
Recultured was established with a singular mission: to reform how universities respond to harmful practices, ensuring that victims and survivors receive the support they need. Our journey began with a deep understanding of the challenges faced by those who have experienced harmful practices and the professionals who support them. This foundation has allowed us to create bespoke training solutions tailored to the unique needs of each university.
Harmful practices encompass a range of behaviours that cause physical, emotional, or psychological harm to individuals. These practices can include forced marriage, honour-based abuse, and female genital mutilation. Recognising the signs of these behaviours is not only about creating a safe environment to study but also about saving lives, as the worst has been known to happen to victims.

What sets Recultured apart is our extensive frontline experience. We have worked directly with victims and survivors of harmful practices, providing them with the emotional and practical support they need to be free from such abuse. This hands-on experience has given us invaluable insights into the complexities of these situations and the best practices for addressing them.
In addition to our frontline work, we have also provided guidance to professionals across a range of statutory and non-statutory sectors. This includes training law enforcement, healthcare providers, and social workers on how to handle cases of harmful practices according to best practices. Our comprehensive understanding of these sectors has informed our approach to training and consultancy.

Our journey into higher education began when higher education institutes were working to revamp their responses to harassment. As experienced practitioners, we were able to support staff and students who experienced any form of harassment however, we also recognised the gaps in how universities were addressing harmful practices, ranging from both home to international students. To address these issues, we worked in various roles within various universities. We realised universities were very complex to navigate, and each university had a different way of responding to such disclosures, with centralised GBV departments often lacking understanding too. This is why we formed Recultured, as we know exactly what questions to ask to create a bespoke training program and risk assessment tool that aims to make it easier for university staff in helping those students who are experiencing such harm.

One of the key components of our training program is our personalised risk assessment tool. This tool is tailored to each university, helping them assess the level of risk associated with different situations. By providing a clear framework for assessing risk, we enable universities to respond more effectively to harmful practices and ensure the safety of their students.
At Recultured, we understand the importance of a trauma-informed approach. Our years of experience providing support and guidance to professionals have taught us that understanding the impact of trauma is crucial for effectively addressing harmful practices. Our training emphasises the importance of empathy, sensitivity, and understanding when working with victims and survivors.
